Should I Electrify My Home?

Updated: 4 days ago

Not sure if you should make the move to an electric-powered home?

We say yes, because home electrification…

●      Reduces carbon emissions, improves indoor air quality, and increases energy efficiency.

●      Pairs especially well with rooftop solar + battery storage for maximum savings and resiliency.

●      Future-proofs your home as utility rates rise, policies shift toward electric infrastructure, and energy independence becomes more desirable as extreme weather events increase.

As leaders in solar installation in Sonoma County, we’ve seen homeowners get amazing benefits when they choose to electrify. If you’re thinking about electrification, read on!

What Is Electrification?

Replacing fossil-fuel–based tech (like gas furnaces and stoves) with clean, electric alternatives (heat pumps, infrared or induction cooktops, electric vehicles).

Impacts on Energy Usage & Emissions

Energy Consumption Reduction

●      Heat pumps can cut home energy usage by 40%, or more when paired with sufficient insulation.

Charging your electric car at home saves you about 50% of gasoline costs, plus no oil changes are necessary!

Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction

Data: Switching to heat pumps can reduce residential GHG emissions by 36%–64%, depending on what system it replaces. (NREL)

Market Momentum

In 2024, heat pump shipments were 32% higher than gas furnace shipments — showing strong consumer shift toward electric heating. (Canary Media)

According to a Bloomberg report, EVs are growing exponentially in the US

Solar energy is growing exponentially to help cover the world energy usage, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratories

Why Not Electrify?

These are the concerns we hear against electrification and some responses to them.

Upfront Costs

What We Hear

Retrofitting existing homes for full electrification can be very expensive: upgrading wiring, panels, and installing electric appliances (heat pumps, induction stoves, EV chargers) adds up.

What We Say

It is true, there is an upfront cost to these upgrades. That’s why we connect our customers with incentives and trusted financing options, so that you can invest in something that will pay itself off and then give you returns for years to come.

Grid Capacity Concerns

What We Hear

Many residential distribution grids may not be ready to handle the increased load from mass electrification. Upgrading the grid to support this could cost billions.

What We Say

This concern is addressed when solar homeowners get a battery, in fact the grid is strengthened by homeowners across the state getting batteries to help with peak demand times, like 3pm in mid-September. That’s why the State is working with Utilities on programs like SGIP (Self Generation Incentive Program), to get more batteries out there!

Batteries make financial sense for most homeowners under the current terms (NBT/NEM3) with PGE.

Additionally, it is time for infrastructure improvements as many of us in Sonoma County are painfully aware.

What Resources Are Out There?

Here are some easy resources to help you learn more about what electrification could look like for you!

The Switch Is On

Check out The Switch Is On for incentives available for YOU.

The Switch Is On catalogs incentives for electrification. Simply type in your information, what you are interested in upgrading, and they will tell you what incentives you are eligible for. This is an awesome resource!

EPA’s Carbon Calculator

Here’s a Fun one! You can check out the EPA’s carbon calculator to see what your impact could be by switching your home and cars to electric. For example, if I use 10,000kWh per year of clean energy for my home, here are some equivalencies:

Project Sunroof is a tool to show you how good your roof is for solar. The brighter yellow your roof faces are, the better exposure they have for solar.
